FASD costs the UK around £9.2 billion a year. £160 billion over the next 30 years
The National Organisation for FASD's Cost of Inaction report asks for the equivalent of 0.25% of alcohol duty receipts — a quarter of one per cent — to fund a four-nation FASD Prevention and Response Programme.
That money would pay for a UK-wide prevention campaign on alcohol and pregnancy, earlier diagnosis, post-diagnostic support, workforce training, better recording of prenatal alcohol exposure, and the small voluntary organisations — like ours — that are currently holding this up.
Locally, the same case is £190 million for a single year group in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, and around £3.3 billion across our whole 0–17 population.
Governments across the UK are reforming health, education, benefits, justice, social care and homelessness right now. FASD sits in every one of those budgets. It should sit in every one of those reforms.
