Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Family FASD Support Group
FASD is the most common preventable neuro-developmental condition in the UK.
FASD is clasified as a severe and profound, lifelong neuro-developmental disorder caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.
The current Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Joint Strategic Needs Assessment for Children and young people factors in that around 3% of local children have FASD. That is about 6,200 children across the two areas.
Peterbrorough Research shows that the figure is higher where children have care experience.
Unfortunately, the advice about the risks associated with drinking while pregnant or when someone could get pregnant has not been clear or well communicated. Many people only realise well into parenting that this may explain the behaviours of their child. Often when a child transitions to secondary school.
With informed, consistent support and appropriate reasonable adjustments those with FASD and their families can be helped and guided to overcome the challenges they may face.
Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Family FASD Support Group is a regional support group offering support to families and professionals in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and in the surrounding counties.
